I use a multimeter and measure the volts from one side of the stack to each plate inbetween … but on a parallel setup like yours where you connect +/- at each pair, it is assumed that each plate pair will reflect the full voltage applied. So this is really only relevent with a series type connection where you need to test the effect of imposing neutral plates to get the volts per gap down into the sweet spot.

baking soda is not a true catalyst. it is consumed in the process. it also seems to vary in conductive wildly as temperature changes and it starts breaking down. its fine for informal experimentation where consistent results are not expected. It do give off massive amounts of CO gas.

Best I have found is potassium hydroxide (KOH, Lye). It is a true catalyst and will not be consumed. It do evaporate so you need to consider recovery methods. It is caustic and must be handled with care.

can anyone tell me what the best electrolyte to use. im using baking soda. does it give off any harmful gas? thanks for your comments.

the two most popular ways to control volts are multiple +/- devices wired in series, or the incorporation of neutral plates in a single device to force a voltage drop across the plates. both methods work well depending on what you want to get done. but exceeding 3v per gap will waste most of what you put in over the 3v to generation of steam, not gas …

I suspect your using a +-+- config? as smartscarecrow stated about the gap and voltage, the easiest yet most tedious way to control your voltage is adding neutral plates between your + and -. it also depends on your use for your plates.

thanks for the comment. how do i check the volts per plate? and whats the best temp for the cell any comments on using baking soda?

if you can see it, its steam … you wont be able to see hydrogen or oxygen … so I would thing the next step would be to try to tame it so you are making gas, not steam … volts is normally the problem … get the volts down into the 2v-3v per plate gap range and you have solved that problem …

as you will quickly find, its pretty easy to make bubbles, but complex to do it well …
